Anyone who's ever used a router understands the satisfaction that a cleanly cut rabbet or mortise can give. But if you're working on small-scale projects, such as jewelry boxes or models, that monster three-horsepower fixed-base router with the 1/2-inch bit is simply overkill. That's where the Dremel 335 comes in. This plunge-router adapter is meant to be used with the Dremel rotary tools (models 400, 398, 395, 300, 285, and 275), which accommodate 1/8-inch diameter bits. If you already own one of these tools, buying the attachment is a great way to get an instant router without having to shell out the extra forty or fifty bucks for a single-purpose machine (that may be too big for what you're doing anyway). Assembling the attachment is simple: just remove the housing cap from your Dremel, reassemble the collet nut, then place the tool into the router attachment. The tool is secured in the attachment with a mounting nut and wrench (both included). The attachment features two plunge depths, which are locked in via a rotary hand grip. Setting routing depth can be a little tricky: it's a good idea to practice on scrap until you get a feel for it. The clear base gives you good stability and lets you see exactly what you're doing, as does the narrow profile of the Dremel tool itself. The attachment also includes an adjustable edge guide that works very well. If you're working on small projects are willing to experiment with the settings, this is the router for you.

 "Flimsy construction is inadequate" 2010-09-06
By Seth
Dremel router bits are small, for fine, delicate work. However, because of the plastic construction and one-sided locking of this tool, it lacks the accuracy required. Getting a precise depth setting is difficult, and the tool does not stay square to the work surface. With caution, it will do the job, but not as well as I would expect.

"Dremel Plunge Router Base Poor Design" 2010-07-17
By David A. Watkins (Geneso, IL USA)
Do not waste your money on this poorly made plunge router base. I found that the cheap plastic construction allowed the Dremel to wobble thus making accurate cuts, especially straight lines very dificult. When lowering the Dremel using the plunge feature, one side or the other will stick and cause the whole assembly to bind. I threw this base in the trash and bought Stewmac's metal router base that has an air blower accessary which is a great system. You can make clear plastic special purpose bases and attach them easily to the Stewmac. I build guitars so accuracy is important.

 "Nice idea, poor execution" 2010-05-26
By Barry E. Russ
Well, I just loved this thing for about a year, then the screw to hold the depth constant, the handle screw, not the depth screw completely failed. Now I can only use it as a plunge router. It will not hold for a set depth anymore. That makes for a very limited tool. I have read the reviews for the alternate "knockoff" version, and am not impressed, so I'll guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy another one like this. I would gladly pay double for a unit that is built better, because I end up buying 2 instead of having one good one. That one will eventually fail too.

"DOES work with Dremel 10.8V Li Ion cordless" 2010-04-30
By ISaidThat (USA)
It turns out that this DOES work with the Dremel 10.8 v Li Ion model (AKA, the 800 or 8000 model)! The literature that came with my cordless Dremel claimed that the two don't work together. However, I nervously purchased the plunge router attachment from a Home Depot which was advertising the two as working together and it turns out that they do! I just tried it and the cordless model screwed into the attachment perfectly. I routed several grooves successfully using the plunge router and the included edge guide.

My biggest complaint is the following: The clamps that secure the edge guide are not very secure, so the guide slowly slipped without my realizing it, resulting in about a 1-2 mm difference in the location of the groove I was cutting between start and finish on one piece of wood. Once I knew that this was I risk, I was just very careful to tighten all the clamps as much as I possibly could and it didn't happen again.

It would also be nice to have an easier method of adjusting and measuring the depth and distance along the edge guide without having to use external measurement tools.

Make sure you take note of the depth lock on the handle. It's very useful for locking in a depth without having to hold down the router against the springs.

Other than that, it works as I would expect it to and I'm pleased with my purchase. Although I have the router bit collection, I so far have only used the attachment with one of the high speed carving bits to make a pencil thin decorative groove in the edge of a picture frame. I was only using basswood, so I can't say how it would stand up to a more strenuous challenge.

"Nice idea, doesn't really work" 2010-04-29
By Andrew Jackson (MD, USA)
This attachment sounded perfect for the model making and dolls' house building I want to do. Thought I'd be able to do some nice box joints with an appropriate jig. Some problems - (1) you can't use standard screw in guide bushings, (2) even if you could get the bit centered on the base, it moves when you cut, so you get wiggly cuts, even with the edge guide (this is presumably why they don't give you guide bushings with any kind of tolerance).

Save you money towards a real router.
